Poll: Your friends from High School

Filed under: Polls — mrshannigan @ 10:05 pm

OK, so I’ve had a lot of fun on Myspace reuniting with friends from high school. Most of us have gone our separate ways, though. I didn’t discover that I had anything overwhelmingly in common with any of them. It was nice to see pictures of their kids, and spouses. It was nice to see who married who. What’s left, though? At least in high school we’d communicate because we had classes together, or were attending the same parties. Unless I plan on visiting the area, I can’t really think of why I’d keep in touch beyond staying “friends” on Myspace. Maybe the twitter-like announcement of our status each time we log on, and reading and relating to their might be enough to spark a new connection. Maybe it’s just nice keeping track of people. I feel like my December card list has tripled (which really makes it even because I don’t think I’ve sent them for a few years) Some of them have made me sad, their life choices aren’t anything I can relate to and that makes me wonder if they have joy in their lives. Silly, isn’t it. I know each person finds joy in their own way. Some of them have made me happy; like the smart gal who straddled right and wrong and is now in law school. Some of them have completely creeped me out (like the gal whose page played a video of her son singing “let the bodies hit the floor”)
and some have made me laugh (like the one who’s expecting baby #1 and asked for advice- what planet is it that hasn’t pummeled this prospective parent with advice? Take pictures, that’s all I could think of)

Myspace- what do you think?

And the poll questions are on the right side menu, at the top.

OMG

There are some things I like to vent about occasionally, and a blog would be a great place to do that if everyone I know (including the people I’m venting about) didn’t read it. Not to mention, my mother, my sister and my kids (and their friends) are all on my myspace list, so where the hell heck can a lady go to vent? How about netspeak? yeah- most of us know about OMG and LOL and ROTFL or even ROTFLMAO and if you’re severely amused or good at acronyms you can probably translate ROTFLMAOUISTPMPARTTB. If you can figure out what I’m venting about, you’ll get a laugh because the situation is quite comedic (if it weren’t so pathetic) Good luck, here it is…

The Crazy Hat Party was a success

Filed under: Graphic Design, Kids are fun — mrshannigan @ 3:25 pm

I think about 15 kids showed up. As promised, the girls did all of the work (readying house for guests and cleaning up after said guests.) Admittedly, my “pile of important desk stuff” ended up all over my bedroom, but after the party, I managed to honestly put it away in places where it really belongs (I filed and purged and stapled and recorded and stuff like that) So we ended up better off than we were before. It was a very entertaining 2 hours, and I’m thinking I’ll let them have another one whenever they ask (with the same requirements)

Party games for 12-14 yr olds, they didn’t have anything planned, but you know me, I would have scheduled sack races and everything if they had let me. The morning of the party, I played a bingo-ish game at MOPS that was a lot of fun. Each square of the card had a different phrase on it, and you had to go around the room finding other guests to whom the phrase applied. At MOPS, the phrases were like “is pregnant” or “has been married over 5 years…” But for the kids party, here are the phrases we used:

Forgot a hat
Has no brothers
Has no sisters
Hates chocolate
Has their own computer
Home Schooled
Broke a Bone
Peanut Allergy
Can Swim
Forgot Pot Luck Food
Picture has been in Newspaper
Shares a RoomHas no Sisters
Free Space
Sings Well
Public School
Oldest kid in Family
Has seen a lion in real life
Not wearing socks
Private School
Been to the Beach
Can Ski
Not born in this state
Bit by Dog
Youngest in family
Initials spell something

I have carefully smudged out the faces of the kids, for anonymity, and I’m noticing that some are missing…. so maybe it was more than 15? Anyhow, I hope they all had fun.

Cinco De Mayo Resources

Filed under: Uncategorized — mrshannigan @ 2:58 am

I do realize this is a travel blog, but we’re homeschoolers on a tight budget, so instead of real ly traveling to Mexico for Cinco De Mayo (which would be stupid because they don’t celebrate it there) we’re just using the holiday to learn a little more about Mexico. Here are some resources we’ve found:

Coloring Page: Children in Traditional Mexican Clothing
Coloring Page: Children playing with pinata
Coloring Page: Mexican boy in Charro suit
Coloring Page: Fiesta
Word Search: easier and harder
Cinco De Mayo songs (not traditional songs, these are goofy teacher-made songs)
Tons of Crafts (with excellent pictures) at Kaboose
Making Friends website also has tons of fiesta crafts you can use for Cinco De Mayo
More Mexican Crafts at Enchanted Learning
