We’re going to Portland

Filed under: Uncategorized — mrshannigan @ 6:23 pm

June 2-5 Not sure of the whole itinerary but we’ll be visiting Pioneer square, the Oregon Zoo, the Oregon History Center and OMSI. I found the Oregon Zoo has great resources for teachers on their website. We’re traveling with a large group of homeschooling families, it’s going to be so much fun. I need to check customer reviews of the hotel we’re staying at, the idea of staying with the group sounds like so much fun but the name of the hotel isn’t consistently reputable throughout the U.S. (lucky me- the hotel reviewer, gets the inside scoop) I don’t want to switch away from the group, but I also don’t want to stay if it’s overpriced or dirty. $71 a night isn’t bad for a big city, but it’s by the airport, and you just never know by the airport. They have a pool and a spa and continental breakfast, but do they have complimentary high speed internet access? Some hotels charge, and what about parking? I’d rather spend $ on a better room than on parking. When we went to CA last summer, they wanted to charge us $12 each time we used the parking lot, so we just parked across the street. And they wanted to charge $10 per day for internet access WTF??? I think it was like a 4 star hotel, too. Marriott I think. But the toiletries were Bath & Bodyworks, I think. That was nice. And it was beautiful, the view was beautiful. The staff was friendly. Anyhow- back to Portland. I can’t wait to get the itinerary. I want to get together with friends from my Mothering Magazine Due Date Club. Lunch, at a park or something. Do I even want to Bring Mr H? He once said “zoos are for retards.”

Do You know the Secret?

Filed under: Uncategorized — mrshannigan @ 5:34 pm

Several years ago, I read Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich, it was like an Oprah AHA moment. The message was, trust your instincts, trust that things always turn out for the best, trust that things will always turn out the way you want them. Don’t stress about things because that doesn’t work and it detracts you from your goals; prevents you from seeing opportunities becuase you’re focused on bad stuff. When I was in high school, I had this neener neener neener song I used to sing in my head “I always get my waaaayyy” Because it was true- I did. And now I find myself singing it more and more often in my head. That’s part of the secret; knowing things will turn out the way you want them. So in comes The Secret; it’s the same knowledge that’s existed since the beginnings of civilization, only all wrapped up in a snazzy year 2000’s wrapper. It’s very palatable that way; it comes in a DVD, an audio book and a regular book. I recommend the audio book. The DVD is too corny, it’s comedy, really. the special effects are a crack up. Watch it after you’ve heard the Audio. The book sucks in comparison to the Audio. Unlike other audio books, The Secret uses the real voices of the people interviewed, in all their excited inflection that can’t be written. So get the audio, stick it in your car and just listen. It’s good stuff. By Rhonda Byrne.

let’s cut the crap here

and start treating caffeine like the drug that it is. Yeah. I popped a caffeine pill this morning because I ran out of sugar and didn’t want to put sweet & low in my coffee. And you know what, I’d do it again. One cup of coffee has 40 caffeines in it (are they mgs or mcgs or what- I don’t care, I’m cutting the crap, remember, it’s 40 units of caffeine, OK) Anyway- a shot of espresso has 2/3 that (so it’s like 26.6 units) A double shot latte has 53.2 units but this little yellow pill has 100 units. I’m not messing around, that’s like 2 1/2 cups of coffee. Without even staining my teeth. It’s genius. AND- I was able to conquer my water toxicity thing because I drank water instead of coffee. I told you I wasn’t messing around.

Girl Scout Cookies

Filed under: Kids are fun, Nutrition, girl scout cookies — mrshannigan @ 3:20 am

You know you’ve had too many Girl Scout Cookies in your life when you notice the difference between bakeries. No, the girls don’t bake them; it’s a business/ finance project and not about cooking. There are two bakeries in the whole country who are licensed to bake Girl Scout Cookies. In our area, we’ve always used ABC but they just had a huge restructure and now we have a whole different Council and we’re going with Little Brownie Bakers. My keen cookie fiend mind had noticed little differences in the cookies.

Peanut Butter Sandwiches (ABC) and Do-si-dos (LBB) (Its like an oreo, but the cookie is peanut butter and so is the cream) When ABC makes them, you can remove one of the hard cookies and peanut butter cream filling stays in one piece. If you stick it to your tongue and flex a little, it creates a suction that removes the entire circle, completely & perfectly. You’re left with two dry peanut butter cookies. When LBB makes them, and you open them up, the center filling sticks, half to one side & half to another & the only way to eat just the cream is to scrape it off of both sides with your teeth. When you’re done scraping, you’ve got two hard cookies with scrapes and saliva on the bottom. So if I had a choice, I’d choose ABC’s peanut butter patties. The tongue thing is 90% of the fun.

Tagalongs (LBB) and Peanut Butter Patties (ABC) Tagalongs have a thinner layer of peanut butter at the top, so IMHO you get a better ratio of peanut butter to cookie to chocolate.

Samoas (LBB) and Caramel Delights (ABC) Just the name so far, they’re my favorite. I hated them as a kid, because of the coconut. They’re delicious.

So I prefer ABC for some things and LBB for others. I liked the boxes from ABC better, I like the theme program and internet ordering features of LBB.

I hate that I have to keep track of cookie sales for 3 kids in 3 different troops this year. I love that they’re ambitious little cookie hustlers and it looks like at least one won’t have to pay for camp. Next year it will be 4 kids in 4 different troops.
