Sunblock is Bullshit

Filed under: Uncategorized — mrshannigan @ 8:28 am

I know we do a lot of crazy things that other people don’t do. Home birth, Homeschool, and, well, lots of other things I don’t want to argue about but this one I have spoken about and HAH HAH HAH I am right.

Sunblock.

It’s not good for you, it causes cancer. NOT the sun, mind you, the friggin sun block, OKAY

You can read my ramblings or read those of Mike Adams, who is some kind of expert.

It just isn’t logical to me that the SUN- the light of the planet we were born to live on- would be toxic to our SKIN- the only thing designed to get in between our guts and the sun’s light.

Mike says…

The scientific evidence, however, shows quite clearly that sunscreen actually promotes cancer by blocking the body’s absorption of ultraviolet radiation, which produces vitamin D in the skin. Vitamin D, as recent studies have shown, prevents up to 77% of ALL cancers in women (breast cancer, colon cancer, cervical cancer, lung cancer, brain tumors, multiple myeloma… you name it).

He says lots of other logical things, too but I urge you to read his article so I don’t have to paste it all here.

I did a little detective work here, to discover the common ingredients in Sunscreen products and found THIS pdf database and THIS, the Skin Deep cosmetics ingredients database

So- the common sun-blocking ingredients are..

Homosalate (moderate hazard)
A UVB protector. Research indicates it is a weak hormone disruptor, forms toxic metabolites, and can enhance the penetration of a toxic herbicide. Restricted in Japan for cosmetics, Enhances skin absorption of toxins

Octinoxate (moderate hazard)
The most widely used sunscreen ingredient, known for its low potential to sensitize skin or act as a phototallergen. Estrogenic effects are noted in laboratory animals as well as disruption of thyroid hormone and brain signaling. Produces excess reactive oxygen species that can interfere with cellular signaling, cause mutations, lead to cell death and may be implicated in cardiovascular disease. Ingredient is suspected or measured to accumulate in people.

Oxybenzone (high hazard)
Associated with photoallergic reactions. This chemical absorbs through the skin in significant amounts. It contaminates the bodies of 97% of Americans according to Centers for Disease Control research. Outlawed in Japan. Produces excess reactive oxygen species that can interfere with cellular signaling, cause mutations, lead to cell death and may be implicated in cardiovascular disease.

Octisalate
(moderate hazard)
Octisalate is a weak UVB absorber with a generally good safety profile among sunscreen ingredients. It is a penetration enhancer, which may increase the amount of other ingredients passing through skin.

Zinc Oxide low
– high risk
Zinc has a long history of use in sunscreen and other skin care products; little absorption and no adverse health effects are reported. Some sunscreens with zinc contain nanoparticles which do not penetrate skin but may pose toxicity concerns if inhaled (like in SPRAY SUNSCREEN) or in the environment. One or more animal studies show brain and nervous system effects at high doses. One or more animal studies show skin irritation at moderate doses

Titanium Dioxide
low- high risk
Titanium dioxide has a long history of use in sunscreen and other products. It appears safe for use on skin, due to low penetration but inhalation is a concern. Some titanium sunscreens (SPRAY SUNSCREEN) contain nano-size particles may have greater toxicity to body tissues and environment.

AvoBenz
One not listed

Octocrylene (moderate hazard)
Octocrylene may be used in combination with other UV absorbers to achieve higher SPF formulas. It produces oxygen radicals when exposed to UV light. Restricted in cosmetics (recommendations or requirements) – use, concentration, or manufacturing restrictions – Japan – restricted for use in cosmetics (concentration limit)

Padimate-O
(moderate hazard)
A derivative of the once-popular PABA sunscreen ingredient, research shows this chemical releases free radicals, damages DNA, has estrogenic activity, and still causes allergic reactions in some people.Restricted in Japan, bla bla bla this is getting old

Ensulizole
(moderate hazard)
Known to produce free radicals when exposed to sunlight, leading to damage of DNA, this UVB protector may have the potential to cause cancer. Restricted in Japan.

Meradimate
(low hazard)
A moderately effective UVA protector not permitted for use in Europe or Japan. 1 study found that it produces damaging reactive oxygen species when exposed to sunlight.

italic text notes are from me

Even though the EPA warns that

“Small children are ten times more sensitive to most chemicals than are adults.”

and a lot of these ingredients increase skin absorption of pesticides (read above)

They’ve got a cute little downloadable song that teaches kids to use sunblock as part of an entire SunWise curriculum for teachers, parents and communities.

Anyhow- the bottom line is- don’t burn. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and limit sun exposure until you’ve built up a little base coat of protection. It’s sun burns (and sun block) that cause cell damage. So use your brain and get out of the sun if you’re prone to burning.

If we lived in tribes and spent most of our time outdoors, it wouldn’t be that big of a deal, we’d all be a little toasted all year long. However, we spend most of our time indoors, (like um all winter) and have weakened our body’s natural ability to deal with the sun. So build it back up, spend more time (ease into it) outdoors and get the Vitamin D that you deserve to prevent 77% of cancers. Even Gardasil doesn’t do that (don’t get me started on Gardasil)

My 9-5 job

Filed under: Uncategorized — mrshannigan @ 6:46 pm

9am
3 asleep, 3 awake.
made coffee
made oatmeal (steel-cut, 1 1/2 c oats, 6c water. 1/4 c sugar, 1t vanilla)
served 3 bowls of oatmeal, with 6-10 chocolate chips on top. They tell me I rock
put diapers in the dryer
7 yr old gets baby dressed without changing baby’s diaper, last night’s diaper leaks within minutes.
Other stuff happened, too but I haven’t finished my coffee yet and this is just too much communication. And no, I’m not making pancakes- I made oatmeal.

10am-5 awake 1 asleep
company’s here
I’m working
4 playing outside
1 talking to me about- wants to download the “free credit report.com” song
Other stuff happened, too but I haven’t finished my coffee and I still have a load of laundry to switch over and you better finish those pancakes.

11am
5 awake, 1 pretending to be asleep
3 said they weren’t filling up the swimming pool on the roof
3 lied
2 hard-of-hearing neighbors don’t hear me saying things like

“What is wrong with you?”

“What part of ‘no pool on the roof’ don’t you understand?”

and “I’m so sick of working to buy stuff you ruin” and

“What the heck (OK- I really said hell- sue me) is the SOY SAUCE doing on the roof? And the Ranch dressing? Why do you think it’s OK to waste food like this?”

and then

“NO- we’re not filling up the pool again, I still have to walk back and forth 50 more times with this stupid bucket dumping it into the lawn.”

2 hard-of-hearing neighbors didn’t hear my 7 yr old saying

“I want to play in the water”

and

“why can’t we swim on the roof?”

and they also didn’t hear me barking at her to clean up the front porch and all the toys in the yard.

In her defense, when I said

“crying will not get you what you want, but cleaning might.”

She proceeded instantly to play my game and hustle around cleaning things up.

The neighbors didn’t hear, not that they would have minded because in their day yelling & spanking and pretending you don’t hear the neighbors were just facts of life. Their nurse/ caretaker heard, though, and smiled. I like her.

12noon
company left
brought back her 4 kids and some KFC
they all want to swim
ate KFC- not enough plates, used cake pans and tupperware rubbermaid lids
F.R.E.E. that spells free…. has played like ten times now. My posse’s gettin’ laughed at
Told two oldest girls to load the dishwasher
Other stuff happened, too but I have to make sure there are no chicken bones lying around waiting for the dog to eat.

1pm
put baby to sleep
got bit several times
didn’t throw the baby
didn’t shout at her about it or put her down to cry herself to sleep for violating the no piranha rule
fed her oatmeal to distract her and tried again
put up with her biting business because we had company and I already looked like a crazy bitchy mom for snapping at my kids all day
Other stuff happened, too. Honestly- you wouldn’t believe it.

2pm
5 yr olds in a fight
M2 pushed a swing into her friend’s head.
I told her to apologize- she did- friend ignored her and she pushed on

“do you want me to bring you ice?”

Then she runs in to get an icepack- doesn’t find one and offers this bit of wisdom.

“If you make a heart with your fingers and rub it in it will spread love around and make it feel better.”

They walk away holding hands.
Baby is still asleep
Lots of other stuff happens, too but you wouldn’t believe it, and I don’t even remember it. This is why I blog.

3pm
7 yr old runs in like a hurricane shouting

“Knock knock,”

I say (of course)

“Who’s there?”

and she says

“An interrupting cow.”

—-

“An interrupting cow, who?”

———— and then she shouts

“MOOOOOO”

and runs away
lots of other stuff happens, too. Do I really need to relive it all?

4pm

“mommy, G1 sat on K’s ear”

“Go get her an icepack”

We both know she can’t find an icepack.
7 yr old runs in I say

“Wait, K. Knock Knock”

she smiles, she’s beautiful.

“Who’s there?”

“An interrupting mommy.”

“An interrupting mommy, who?”

“NO NO NO NO NO”

she laughs and runs away.
The site I’m working for is down for maintenance for the next 2 hours
Baby is awake- that was a very long nap.

5pm
feeding baby oatmeal. My friend has never seen Yo, Gabba Gabba. It’s a children’s television show that uses hip hop music tunes and freaky monster-characters to teach kids supposedly good things. I love the “party in my tummy” song and I tend to sing the chorus whenever I feed the baby real food. I have a dance for it, too. I had never really heard all the words now and I’m really concerned for the kids who watch the show unattended. Anxiety over the emotional lives of carrots might be an unnecessary stressor; you be the judge…

Baby sent some KFC napkins to the party in her tummy.
Would you believe, that other things went on during this hour, too. I am sure you’d be amused to know about treehouse incidents, climbing through windows, running out of toilet paper, more fighting friends, and how many times I had to hear the credit report.com song. But I”ll spare you. I’m off at 5.

Is it an eating disorder?

Filed under: Uncategorized — mrshannigan @ 8:25 pm

This occured to me when the Mom’s Talk Network website brought up this article about how Plus size clothing is easier to find these days.

In the article, it was like a good thing. I guess it is. I mean, we can’t all go around naked and we should try looking pretty

I just don’t know.

I’m all for:
Being happy with who you are
Being healthy and making smart food choices
Getting adequate exercise and walking rather than driving

I’m all against:
Getting a handicapped plaquard for obesity
Eating processed garbage foods instead of real foods
Drinking a day’s worth of calories in carbonated beverages

I don’t know if it’s right to glorify, even idealize an unhealthy body by saying things like “embrace your voluptuous self.” Confidence is important and all, but to be honest, I’d be a lot more confident if I didn’t have this extra 30 pounds. Sure, I wish I had clothes that fit but I’m not about to go buy bigger clothes so that I can be fashionable during this ugly time in my life.

Sure- I hear stories sometimes, from people who are overweight and say “I only eat healthy” but when I am at the grocery store, it’s another story. Chee-tos, pepsi, boxed cereals, TV dinners, chicken nuggets, crackers, chips, canned soups, frozen pies, donuts, boxed dinners, white breads, all that middle-aisles food that really isn’t “real.”

When I go out to eat, it’s the same thing. If I go out for fast food, or to a buffet, I look around at my fellow diners and they’re bigger, on average, than the people I see at a healthier restaurant. I can never finish a meal because I look around and see big people gobbling up big meals. Is it an eating disorder that I can’t swallow in that situation?

From the article;

Finding the perfect lingerie can transform your figure, so take a deep breath, grab a piece of negligee and head off to the dressing room. You can and will look fantastic in plus size lingerie.

I wonder what kind of lighting they use in there, because I can’t imagine feeling sexy with all these…. lumps on my legs and bum.

I think I’m going to hang that picture in my house to remind me to stop eating cookies so much. And walk more often. Because I don’t want to learn first hand about these plus sized clothing stores and I’m running out of things to wear.

And for the record, that is NOT me in the picture, even though our faces kind of look similar. I’m not that lumpy yet and I would never EVER be photographed in such a way. If I did, I might end up completely anorexic

My Big Green Husband

Filed under: Uncategorized — mrshannigan @ 8:20 am

Before I start- whew- it’s a good thing I didn’t get that iphone. I read today that it’s not working for women with nails because the touchscreen isn’t sensitive to nail pressure, it has to be an electromagnetic fingertip. Not that I have nails right now, but not being able to have them due to my fancy i-phone would suck. I’ll keep my blackberry, thank you.

About my green husband. He wasn’t like this when I married him, I swear. Not that I’m complaining or anything, It’s all quite smart.

He is plotting right now to alter our lawnmower engine to run on water. He’s watched the video on creating a fuel cell a thousand times. He’s done little experiments in the kitchen with water, batteries, metals, electrometers and other boy things. Once he masters the technique, he’s going to do the car. His goal is to get our house “off the grid.” He’s used that term like ten thousand times today.

We just saw the movie “The 11th hour.” I thought it would be all depressing, so I didn’t want to watch it, I just sat there in his office with my laptop working on my new website a top secret project. It was quite uplifting, though. Instead of feeling like “OMG we can never stop this stupid global warming thing let’s just suck it up and relax.” Which is my normal reaction to uncomfortable suggestions that we all go live in a cave and eat berries be environmentally aware; I watched the movie and felt quite empowered afterward. Not just because Leonardo DiCaprio is so sexy (Rose, I’ll never forget you…) but because the movie really helped me understand that it is possible to heal what industrialized life has done to the earth. I didn’t feel hopeless, it was empowering. whatever. watch it and you’ll know what I”m saying this is getting boring all this examining my emotions- sorry dudes.

I don’t buy the whole overpopulated business. I didn’t know the world’s population has doubled since like Kennedy or someone was in office. I really think the earth can support all these people if we just make LESS of an impact.

Luckily my cheap-ass lifestyle is fairly low impact. I cook from scratch, not a lot of extra packaging or factory emissions from our food (that’s 8 people eating green). I don’t buy local as often as I can, but I smile at the pregnant ladies and the vendors at the farmer’s market, that’s gotta help. We use cloth diapers. I hung stuff out to dry a while back. I drink plenty of water, even though it’s toxic. Sometimes, I walk to the store instead of driving. My kid splay with real potatoes instead of plastic ones. And I am sure that homebirth might have less of an environmental impact, aside from being such a fun way to spend the weekend.

Anyway- so Mr Green wants to form some kind of commune where nobody has to work, you just do what you want. Some people like to cook, so they can feed him. He’s going to take up fishing, in case people want to eat fish (he doesn’t like fish, but he likes the idea of sitting on a boat on the lake all day) If someone wants him to build faux finish walls (stone, brick…) he’ll do that, too and build things. If he feels like it. You have to apply, because we can’t just have a village full of toilet scrubbers (but we do need at least one) And this just cracks the surface of the degree of flipped he’s at. I love him dearly, and this is all very entertaining but somehow I always get stuck with the paperwork. I think I’d rather be the toilet scrubber.

I just wonder, instead of house-hunting on the west side, should I look in like Montana or something?

Note to my email subscribers, 4 of whom emailed me to mention the new “auto text thing” at the bottom of the post. All the crud that’s going down around here is the same crazy crud that’s always going down, I just gave it that name to inspire people to subscribe. I’m not sure I like the term, but it got your attention, so maybe it will stay. Feel free to forward the post to someone you love so they subscribe to me, too. Pregnant Ladies at the Farmer’s Market

Filed under: Uncategorized — mrshannigan @ 12:04 am

Yeah- what’s up with that? I went to the Farmer’s Market every week when I was pregnant, but that’s just me. I must have seen like 30 of them this morning. Is it the food?

Speaking of- Chicken Kabobs went from $4 to $8 over the winter and someone is selling big fat braided pieces of fleece for $4 each as dog toys.

Vegetables were- eh- just what I expect in June here. Not much.

I love that everyone puts on their hippy outfit to wear to the Market. What’s up with that. I felt so out of uniform, in my Maternity Jeans and green T shirt. We live in the most – - not hippy- – town and yet every Sunday when the Farmers Market is open and every mid-July when the Folk Life Festival comes, and Thursday nights at Franklin park, everyone is suddenly wearing flowing skirts and tie dye. I’m just as guilty- flowing skirts are great when it’s 500 degrees out.

I saw a lot of baby slings and carriers, but I doubt there were any cloth diapers. And what’s up with – um – people who let their 4 yr olds wear high heels? Are they immune from bunions? Does it make their calves look sexy?

Sorry- I know I don’t normally talk this much smack but I’m kind of tired and hot and didn’t get any green garbanzo beans, just a few plants and the kids spent their money on McDonalds. Why can’t they buy like- spinach or something? Damn kids.

Thanks for the cheeseburger.

Shut up about the friggin’ corn thing, OK

You crawled right past me today

Filed under: Uncategorized — mrshannigan @ 7:23 am

What the heck was that? You wanted the My Little Pony toy your sister brought you. But you crawled past me. You inchwormed.

What’s up with babies? Why does it go by so fast? She did it. She crawled past me to get to a toy. Last week she got her bottom 2 teeth. In my book, that means it’s OK to start tasting foods. She’s had some mashed bananas and some cooked carrots. She loved them both. I think I’m going to bake some teething crackers for her, My husband gave her a pizza crust. I think my oldest was like 5 before she had white bread. It’s really easy to enjoy giving her food when she’s threatening to bite my boob. I screamed and she laughed. I made a scary monster noise and she laughed.

Today the dog was on the couch and she pulled herself up to stand so she could give him kisses.

Why do they grow so fast?

So if There’s Life on Mars, We Just Killed It

Filed under: Uncategorized — mrshannigan @ 2:40 am

Nah- I don’t really know if that’s true, but it could be, theoretically I’m guessing.

The Mars Phoenix thing is up there, robotically digging holes on Mars and it stumbles across something… shiny. This thing takes pictures, too. It takes a picture. And before you can say “send a sample of this back to the lab” it up and evaporates. Go go gadget kill the last remaining life form on the red planet. Knowing that red and green are complimentary colors and quite possibly these underground underwater swimming martians know what causes autism. Wait- are we the blue planet? Because that would ruin my whole color theory. So much for learning it all in kindergarten.

Wordless Wednesday- A halo braid for my devilish daughter

Filed under: Uncategorized — mrshannigan @ 8:46 pm

If my battery hadn’t died you’d be looking at pictures of her pulling it out screaming “I hate it, it looks stupid and horrible and hideous, you’re the worstest braider in the world. You probably ruined my hair ffoorrreevvveeerrr.” She was red faced with tears streaming down her cheeks and hyperventilating.

Later, she says “I’m sorry I freaked out, Mommy t was just (gasp) so (gasp) ugly I couldn’t handle it being on my head anymore. It’s not my style today.”
